Frequently Asked Questions from Parents

What are the advantages for my child attending this tour?

Each tour has its own unique characteristics which determine the advantages. On the one hand the Kalahari Vasbyt is an adventure course and on the other hand the Vic Falls Train Safari is aimed at relaxation. The tours to Europe lie somewhere inbetween.

Regardless of which tour your child prefers, he or she wil find they have a headstart over other children who have not undertaken the tour. Youngsters learn by means of their own experience to think independently, to be responsible for their own finances and which values they accept as true. Our tours are incredibly popular and definitely not because they are cheap. It has more to do with the parents who are amazed by the positive spin-off they see in their children's lives once they have attended one of our tours.

Are the tour leaders dependable?

Andries Erwee was born in 1958, is married and has two daughters. His passion for the youth is well-known. Magazines, newspapers and other media have frequently reported on his special gift for interacting with the younger generation. Sarie wrote: "Everywhere parents are astonished to see what he achieves with their children." READ ARTICLE Andries has obtained the highest possible qualifications as cultural tour guide in South Africa and is also a fully qualified nature guide.

Tertius Zimmermann undertook his first tour with Andries in 1987 when he was a grade eight student. Since then he has toured extensively. His extremely pleasant personality has made him one of the most popular tour guides in our country. He is also qualified as a cultural and nature tour guide. Tertius was married in 2005 and started his fulltime studies in theology quite recently. There are other adults helping out on virtually every tour. We do everything in our power to select persons who share our vision for the education of our youngsters.

If your child is not willing to devote all their energy to ensuring that they return with a head start in life, then they should not aspire to become a member of our tour. Although we do all we can to protect your child, there will always be those individuals who may try to abuse your children for their own purposes. This is why the tour leader goes out of his way to ensure that all adult leaders adhere to certain rules.

Code of conduct for tour leaders and adults on youth tours:

The privacy of all children and teenagers is respected. Should it be necessary to enter showers, at least two adults need to accompany one another.

Adults never share rooms or tents with teenagers without express permission of the tour leader and then only on the rarest of occasions.

No alcohol may be consumed for at least five hours before you drive any vehicle. No adult may be visibly under the influence of alcohol in the presence of any youngsters or be in their camp, tents or rooms. No adult may use any alcohol whatsoever when on duty.

No punishment of any nature may be meted out to any learner without the express authority of the tour leader, even if you happen to be the relevant child's parent.

You will respect, in word and deed, all reasonable orders of the tour leader to the teenagers. You will support and adhere to the tour's rules.

Is the Vasbyt tour dangerous?

TRAINS. Well, personally I am scared to death of some of our suburban trains. But this is a completely different kind of train. It is completely private and nobody who is not a member of the tour is allowed on board.

BUNGEE JUMPING. Persons have injured themselves in some of the minor heights. But the bridge at Victoria Falls is extremely high. This is why not a single person has ever injured him or herself in the ten years that have seen some 70 jumps daily. There is a hundred times more chance that you could injure yourself in bed. Extreme Adventures offer this adventure. They have excellent equipment and also offer similar jumps in South Africa and New Zealand.

WHITE WATER RAFTING. Some seven persons have already died since the introduction of this activity in the nineteen eighties. Five of them were guides who sacrificed their lives to save clients who did not follow the instructions. The Zambezi is an immense river and all the safety measures and instructions from your guide should be followed strictly. The guides are all extremely friendly, fit and brave. If however, you ignore their instructions you can expect some very harsh action and even some applicable punishment. Statistically speaking the percentage of accidents is negligible. But no costs are spared to ensure that the consequences of accidents are kept as low as possible. A rescue team will accompany the group. Safety equipment includes rescue kayaks and a helicopter with divers. Shearwater Adventures are reknown internationally for their excellent record on the Zambezi and I also entrust my own children to them.

WILD ANIMALS. Do not have any illusions. Wild animals can be dangerous. And on top of it we will be going on game drives in some of the wildest of parks. However, our guides are very capable and accidents only occur very rarely. I am grateful that I have never experienced any accident. Some lions and elephants have already tested my own safety measures and fortunately the measures have always been effective.

VICTORIA FALLS. The situation around Victoria Falls has always been tranquil and placid. Victoria Falls is located within a National Park and is thus isolated from happenings in the rest of Zimbabwe. But of course Temba College cannot afford to expose tour members to any risks and so we will not hesitate to change our Falls venue to Livingstone in Zambia if the situation should worsen. It has now become quite customary for people to stay on the Zambian side and to visit the Falls daily on the Zimbabwean side.

What would Temba like to achieve?

We aim to create a pleasant experience for the youngsters that will simultaneously provide them with a head start in life.

I think it is a very careless person who would be willing to send his or her child on a tour without finding out how dependable the tour arrangements and the persons in charge are. ASK REFERENCES
